I can’t believe it is already September! This year sure is flying by. Nevertheless, September is actually one of my favorite months. Here, in Colorado, the weather is fantastic with not so scorching days, cooler nights, and beautiful fall foliage. It is also designated as “National Yoga Month” which is actually one of my favorite things to do. But I’m pretty sure you already knew that.
National Yoga Month:
Just about everything out there either has a month or day designated as National Whatever Day or Month. And that’s cool because observances can be a great excuse to indulge in a fun treat such as chocolate, pursue an activity such as yoga, become educated, or celebrate various heritages. I mean sometimes, all you need is a little excuse right! …Here are just a few:
***National Chocolate Day is July 7th
***National Dance Day is the last Saturday in July
***National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is October
So yoga has the whole month of September!
Actually, September as National Yoga Month is fairly recent. In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services designated the month of September as National Yoga Month. The organization’s objective was to bring forward a select number of national health observances in an effort to promote healthy behaviors.
The cool thing is that National Yoga Month actually took off! In 2008, the first observance, had a 10 City Yoga Health Festival Tour. The tour offered yoga classes, lectures, music, entertainment, and exhibits. All with the hope that people might learn the wonderful benefits that yoga provides and it still goes strings even today.
Check out your local yoga community to see how they are celebrating:
1. Studios – may offer a free class or host community classes in nearby parks.
2. Yoga stores – may have great sales, classes in the store
3. Online – there maybe sales, free class trials
4. Regular yoga classes may do something special or different like workshops, 108 Sun Salutation Practice, offer beginner yoga classes, play live music, or pose breakdowns…
Last year, for National Yoga Month, I started this blog. That’s right, it’s almost has been a year and I’ve been going strong ever since. Another thing that I regularly do is focus on a pose for the week. Essentially, I slow down and take an opportunity to educate my students about their practice. Usually, I highlight a specific pose in my classes, teach the Sanskrit pronunciation, give out informative handouts, and really break the pose down to include all the modifications, and then I allow the class to explore the pose in depth and of course learn to develop awareness so all will do the pose properly and thus prevent injury.
So I ask, what are you doing during National Yoga Month? I’d love to hear from you!
